Neuss, Germany – January 10th, 2025 – The MKC-820NP medical 8K Super High-Vision camera, jointly developed by Ikegami Tsushinki Co., Ltd. and the NHK Foundation, has been used in a laparoscopic clinical trial with real time remote surgery guidance.
This clinical trial was conducted by National Cancer Center Hospital in cooperation with the NHK Foundation. The objective was to test the feasibility of a remote surgery guidance, by transmitting a real time 8K super high vision image of the operation from a laparoscopic system. The highly detailed image was transmitted over 500 kms to a distant skilled doctor who gave guidance to the operating surgeon. This involved a colorectal cancer patient and is believed to be the words first case. The trial was conducted in light of the insufficient and unevenly distributed number of highly skilled doctors, which Japan holds as a growing issue.
The MKC-820NP camera used in the clinical trial combines Ikegami’s extensive medical imaging skills together with the 8K Super High-Vision technology which the company has cultivated over many decades of broadcast business. It also integrates the NHK Foundation's experience and knowledge in 8K medical camera development and related clinical procedures. The MKC-820NP used in this study is a second-generation model with less than one seventh the volume and one third the mass of the earlier version. The second version also introduces compatibility with commercially available scope holders.
The MKC-820NP has a resolution of 8K (3600 TV lines), delivering four times the quality of existing 4K/UHD television systems and 16 times the resolution associated with 1920 x 1080 pixel HD.
Based on the results obtained from clinical trials, Ikegami will continue to refine the MKC-820NP camera system’s specific relevance to meet the surgical field and other medical applications.
